CALGARY, AB (September 2025): NGIF Accelerator, a leader in supporting cleantech innovation for Canada’s natural gas sector, has announced $159,970 in funding to Power to Hydrogen (P2H2) through its Industry Grants program. The investment will support the validation and demonstration of P2H2’s patented Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) electrolyzer technology, an effective system designed to produce clean hydrogen at scale and cost levels competitive with conventional natural gas-based production methods.

P2H2, a Global Cleantech Challenge finalist, is based in Columbus, Ohio and is backed by the U.S. Department of Energy, NASA, ARPA-E, and leading global energy companies such as Shell, Enel Green Power, and American Electric Power. Its innovative AEM electrolyzer systems overcome the durability and cost barriers faced by existing electrolysis technologies, replacing expensive materials such as platinum and iridium with widely available nickel and stainless steel.

Through this NGIF Accelerator-supported project, P2H2 will demonstrate an industrial-scale 500-kW integrated electrolysis system. Capable of producing up to a quarter ton of hydrogen and two tons of oxygen per day, the system will validate P2H2’s business model of supplying both pressurized hydrogen and oxygen for industrial use. At scale, the technology has the potential to decarbonize over one million metric tons of Canada’s refining operations, while also creating opportunities to integrate clean hydrogen into Canada’s natural gas sector through blending, power generation, and other low-carbon applications.

By achieving below $2/kg hydrogen costs when paired with renewable energy, P2H2’s patented AEM electrolyzers offer a path forward for clean, scalable, and economically viable hydrogen production. Following this project, the technology is expected to reach TRL 8 readiness for commercialization and mass production.

“NGIF Accelerator is proud to support Power to Hydrogen in scaling its cost-effective AEM electrolyzer technology, advancing clean hydrogen, enabling low-carbon backup power, and creating new opportunities for Canada’s natural gas sector,” said John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Accelerator. “This project aligns with our commitment to advancing cleantech solutions across the natural gas value chain and empowering consumers with smarter, more efficient energy choices.”

Quote from Paul Matter, CEO of Power to Hydrogen, Inc. “The world needs lower cost and lower emission hydrogen molecules for production of fuels and chemicals, long-duration renewable energy storage, and high temperature heating.  We are excited to work with NGIF and their strong team of partners to help the industry diversify its sources of molecules.  The continued support, capabilities and expertise of the natural gas industry is needed to enable the distribution and utilization of clean hydrogen.”

“Canadians want and need the affordable, reliable energy service offering they have come to expect from the natural gas industry. When we created NGIF, it was our vision to bring the entire natural gas value chain together to support cleantech development that enhances environmental and economic performance for the sector. I am glad to see our vision in action as NGIF continues to support technologies like Power to Hydrogen’s AEM electrolyzer,” said Timothy M. Egan, President and CEO, Canadian Gas Association, and Chair, NGIF Capital Corporation.

About the NGIF Accelerator

NGIF Accelerator is the not-for-profit arm of NGIF Capital and will operate all technology and innovation programs. The NGIF Accelerator mandate is to de-risk and accelerate technology development by supporting startups through their pilot projects, field trials, and industry validation. It will coordinate with federal and provincial governments to co-fund projects to advance market commercialization. NGIF Accelerator currently operates the Industry Grants program and administers the NGIF Emissions Testing Centre program.

About the Industry Grants Program

The Industry Grants Program is industry-led and offers non-dilutive grants to fund early-stage startups for technology development and field demonstration. The program specifically de-risks pre-commercial technology solutions that have the potential to increase the environmental performance of the natural gas sector. Each project in the program will accelerate technology readiness level progressions through controlled pilot testing and field trials to advance commercialization.
